About the Graduate School of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences

Master’s Course

(1) Food Innovation

The Food Innovation area focuses on issues of production, distribution, processing, and the consumption of food. It also promotes education and research to solve problems using aspects of natural science, technology, and the social sciences.

Food Business Management Specialization

This specialization covers education and research that explore and resolve issues related to the food industry primarily from management perspectives.

Food Technology Development Specialization

This specialization covers education and research concerning the quest for high-value-added products such as highly functional foods and the development of food for the elderly, from scientific and technological perspectives.

(2) Agricultural and Environmental Innovation

The Agricultural and Environmental Innovation area focuses on issues related to industries involved in the food supply - agriculture, livestock production and fisheries) and rural/ coastal communities, as well as environmental issues related to the industries, and the promotion of education and research to tackle the issues.

Farm Management Specialization

This specialization covers education and research on science and biotechnology in food production, and on managerial issues of local agriculture, to lead in the promotion of agriculture in each region.

Environmental Management Specialization

This specialization covers education and research on environmental and energy issues that are emerging in the agriculture and food industries or in rural and coastal regions.


Doctoral Course

This program consists of two areas: Food Research and Agricultural and Environmental Research. Both areas correspond, respectively, to much the same areas of expertise as in the Food Innovation Area and the Agriculture and Environmental Area of the Master’s Program.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to make advances in education, research and social activities related to food and agriculture and their environments at all steps of the cycle – food production, food processing, food distribution, food services, and food consumption.


Educational Objectives

(1) Master’s Course

Our educational objective is to help students develop excellence in research, development, and the advanced knowledge needed to become a researcher or a highly specialized professional in the field of food, agricultural and environmental sciences.

(2) Doctoral Course

Our educational objective is to help students become autonomous researchers in the field of food, agricultural and environmental sciences, skilled coordinators who can be leaders in the formation of industrial clusters between agriculture, commerce and industry, and/or executive business leaders with expert knowledge and research skills.


Features of education / Graduate School of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences

(1) Master’s Course

Our program offers the following educational opportunities: Students can study the subjects of each specialized field of food industry and sciences through lectures on basic theories, lectures and exercises on practical problem solving, and case methods.
Students can gain a comprehensive perspective about the food industry and the food, agricultural and environmental sciences, through the class titled “Research Methods for Food Industry Studies” which is compulsory for first year master’s course students.
Students have an alternative to complete the master’s course by submitting a report on the“Project Research” instead of submitting a master’s thesis.

(2) Doctoral Course

Our program offers the following educational opportunities:  Students receive individualized tutoring with both their principal and secondary academic supervisors (in their major area of study) and get overall advice from other staff in charge of the Doctoral Program.
Individualized tutorials with principal and secondary academic supervisors start immediately after admission and focus on the research theme of the individual student.
The overall advice system includes an annual interim report meeting on the doctoral research where instruction is received from professors with specialties in the various fields of food, agricultural and environmental sciences.

The Master’s Course in the Graduate School of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences accepts individuals who seek to possess knowledge and experience in the food industry, and to apply and enhance that knowledge and skill in their field of expertise.
The Doctoral Course in the Graduate School of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences accepts individuals who, based on their knowledge and experience in the food industry, have a strong willingness to unlock the frontiers of that knowledge and skill in their field of expertise.
